Las Vegas, Nevada and the Sam Boyd Stadium was the site of the Dave Coombs, Sr. East vs. West Lites Shootout on Saturday night, May 2 along with the final race of the Supercross class for the 2008 Supercross Championship Title at stake.
The first heat of the event was the Lites West riders. Bobby Kiniry holeshotted but his lead was shortlived as Ryan Dungey moved into the front spot. Dan Reardon went down on the first lap as Austin Stroupe made a pass on Jason Lawrence and Dungey to take the lead for the heat win followed by Dungey and Lawrence.
Heat #2 was the East riders with Nico Izzi being the fastest out of the gate. But Izzi moved to 2nd as Ryan Villopoto cruised into the front spot where he remained at the checkered. Ryan Sipes was in 6th on the first lap as he, Morais and Canard were locked in a battle on lap #2. Sipes moved up to 5th at one point as Matt Goerke powered his bike up to third. On the final lap Izzi lost two positions as Canard gave it his all to catch Villopoto. The checkered saw a 16 second gap between Villopoto and Canard with Goerke finishing third and Izzi taking 4th. Kyle Chisholm went down on the final lap but was able to hold on to the final transfer spot. Sipes finished 7th in the heat.
Josh Grant was unable to compete in the night's events due to a concussion from an afternoon practice crash. Also Branden Jesseman, Kyle Partridge and Billy Payne were unable to compete due to issues with the afternoon practice.
Lites Shootout Main event saw Villopoto win the $1000 Progressive holeshot award as Villopoto, Dungey and Reardon lead the first lap. Brett Metcalfe and several other riders, went down on the start of the race. Sipes, Stroupe, and Hepler were at the back of the pack. Canard moved past Readon by lap two to go into third. The fifth lap saw Nico Izzi move by 7th place Jason Lawrence. Ryan Morias and Matt Goerke battle for 5th place on the 7th lap but the battle ended as Goerke went down.On the 8th lap, Lawrence pulled off the track to not complete the race. The 9th lap, saw Dungey closing the lap to Villopoto and the 10th lap saw Dungey have his fastest lap time 108.34, faster than Villopoto's best time. At this point, Sipes had worked his way up to 20th. By lap 11 in the 15 lap race, Dungey decided it was time to go for Villopoto. Lapped riders appeared and poor lines seemed to hamper Villopoto's speed as the he and Dungey lapped half the field of riders. The excitement of the pair racing was described as "the shootout at the shootout". The final lap saw Dungey end his quest for the lead position as he made his pass on Villopoto to take the checkered to win his 2nd truck in two years and to be crowned the 2008 Dave Coombs, Sr. Lites Shootout Champion. Villopoto was 4.8 seconds behind Dungey Villopoto took runner-up honors with Trey Canard finishing 3rd. Sipes ended up 19th. "Two years in a row. I rode with knowledge. I tried to make no mistakes.
